Scarves, jewellery, purses and shoes….Oh my! Where does a girl begin? The hunt for the right accessories can be an overwhelming and daunting task. Accessories are a necessity when putting an outfit together. They are the finishing touch, the icing on the cake. But, with so many options how do you know to pick the right ones? An accessory can make or break an outfit, so choose wisely.

You want your accessories to be fun, functional and definitely not boring. When in doubt, you can opt for the traditional and classic pearls, diamond stud earrings, a great pair of pumps and long necklaces. You can never go wrong with these basics. But, why not mix it up a bit sometimes and go for things that are a little more bold and playful. Some days it’s better to stand out and some days it’s better to blend in and be more subtle. You can change an outfit by simply choosing different accessories. With a simple change of jewellery, handbag and shoes you can go from a day at the office to a special evening out.

You don’t need to spend oodles of money on new clothes, all you need to do is accessorize! You can completely change your look and save money at the same time. Accessories add personality to your wardrobe. You can go for a classic or trendy look depending on your mood. They can add endless opportunities to just one outfit.

Here are a few tips to help you accessorize…

It’s very important to not over-accessorize. You must find the right balance to create a look and not look like a Christmas tree or worse, like Mrs. Roper on Three’s Company. For those of you don’t get this reference, google it ;-)

Invest in the basics first – pearls, hoop earrings, pumps, a long necklace, a beautiful scarf and a great quality handbag. These treasures may be a little expensive, but they are worth the investment. Young or old, these items are timeless and will be a staple in your wardrobe for decades to come.

Think about your lifestyle. Do the pieces suit your lifestyle and personality? What looks good on one woman, may not look good on you.

Follow flattering trends only. Just because something is this season’s “must-have” doesn’t necessarily mean they are right for you. Just because a Kardashian is wearing something, doesn’t mean you have to run out and buy it.

Accessories are just like clothes. There are different styles and sizes for different body types. If you’re a petite girl, you don’t want to sport the big earrings or chunky necklaces that will overpower your small frame.
Don’t forget to actually wear your accessories. Some of us tend to accumulate, dare I say collect drawers of scarves, shelves of shoes and jewellery boxes overflowing with baubles. What good is that if we have all these options, but never wear them?! Make an effort to plan your outfit ahead of time. This will allow you to take the time to choose just the right pieces for that polished and stylish look.

Michael Kors once said, “I’ve always thought of accessories as the exclamation point of a woman’s outfit.” Think of this tomorrow when you’re getting ready to face the world.
