Wardrobe Wednesday: The jean jacket - A wardrobe essential!

Who knew back in 1880 that Levi Strauss would have been the creator of one of the most essential pieces in a woman’s wardrobe? It was originally created as a utility garment for cowboys, railroad engineers and miners. Fast forward to the 1950s where this utilitarian piece of clothing started to become a fashion trend. For example, Marilyn Monroe was seen sporting a denim jacket on the sets of many movies. From that point on through the decades the denim jacket became, and still is, a practical and stylish staple in everyone’s closet.

A jean jacket is a must for all seasons, especially the summer when it’s the time to kick back, relax and switch to more casual outfits. But, that doesn’t have to come at the expense of style. Layering in the summer months is essential for those cool summer evenings or when we are hit with a blast of air conditioning. The denim jacket gives a dose of style to any outfit. What better layering piece?!

Our favourite wardrobe staple comes in so many varieties now. The traditional blue denim is always a great go-to, but why not try faded, white, pink, embellished or embroidered to kick it up a notch?!

Here are a few pointers to look for when shopping for that perfect jacket…

  • Make sure it hits at the hipbone or higher for the most flattering fit.
  • It should have a stretch component for better comfort.
  • The denim should be soft, not the rigid fabric of the 70s.
  • Wear it open to show off and accentuate your figure.

The denim jacket can go with anything and everything. Wear it over a dress, a sleeveless tank or T-shirt and capris or even a jumpsuit. The jacket elevates your outfit to fashionable and on-trend without sacrificing comfort. It even looks fantastic paired with feminine looks and prints. The jean jacket gives you that effortlessly cool vibe and modernizes any outfit.
