Wardrobe Wednesday: Cold feet, warm heart?

We’ve all heard the expression, cold feet, warm heart. Who in the world came up with that?! I am pretty sure we can all agree that cold feet lead to misery. If my feet are cold, I am a miserable lady. I may have a warm heart, but not when my toes are like little popsicles. I don’t think anyone is totally immune to this symptom of winter on some occasion.

We spend so much time and effort searching for the perfect coat, the coziest hat and mitts, the warmest, waterproof boots, BUT none of that matters if your feet are still cold. The dampness will prove to be unbearable and regardless how much you wiggle those tootsies it will not fix the problem. Here are a few Do’s and Don’ts for keeping your feet warm and cozy.

DON’Ts

  • Doubling up those sport socks or wearing socks that too are thick is a major mistake. Your feet should be able to move in your shoes or boots. You should definitely be able to wiggle your toes. The pressure in your shoe or boot caused by lack of space will add to poor circulation. This will make your toes and feet even colder.
  • Avoid cotton socks!! Though ideal for the summer months, cotton only absorbs just over 10% of their weight when wet which leads to colder feet. You need more absorbency to wick moisture away from the feet.
  • Avoid nylon or polyester!! These man made synthetic fibers are so closely woven together that they don’t allow for your feet to breathe. Your feet will perspire and thus be wet because these type of socks will not wick away any moisture. Wet feet = freezing feet!!

DO’s

  • Opt for wool. Our ancestors knew best. They knew wool was a magic fiber that both absorbs and repels liquid at the same time. Wool socks are able to wick away moisture as your feet begin to sweat then it evaporates before it can accumulate around your foot. Merino wool is the best by far! It isn’t itchy; it’s thin; it will regulate the temperature and it can absorb 30% + of its own weight in water.
  • Bamboo is another miracle fiber. Feet stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter in this fabric. Known for its moisture wicking properties and softness, this can be a perfect option for the winter months.
  • Liner socks and technical fibers are great if you plan on spending extended periods of time outdoors. New technical blends are being produced continuously. The best place to find these types of socks is at the ski shop. They are the pros for all your ski bunny needs.
  • Cashmere socks…pricey, but fabulous…Need I say more?! :)

When it comes down to it, like any other piece of clothing or accessory, you don’t need to sacrifice look for warm tootsies. The sock industry is paying more attention to detail and design. There are beautiful arrays of colours and patterns available now in merino, bamboo or cashmere blend socks. Any of these socks are perfect for the office or any outdoor activity you want to enjoy. You will be guaranteed to have warm feet AND a warm heart!
