Urban Foodie Review: Les Vieux Four Manago

As my friend and I entered Resto Vieux Fort Manago, an Italian restaurant located on St. Charles in Kirkland, we were welcomed by a warm ambiance with dimmed lighting, soft background music and a hostess with a friendly smile. The restaurant buzzed with excited energy, and was comfortably full with seemingly satisfied patrons.

The menu offers a wide variety of mouth-watering starters. We shared the Italian sausage appetizer, which was served atop a bed of sautéed red and green peppers, mushrooms, onions, and asparagus, all in a spicy tomato sauce. It was simply delicious. Fresh, warm bread was plentiful. As we waited to order our meals, my friend sipped a glass of white wine while I, as the designated driver, had a soft drink.

For the main course I ordered a cheese pizza. It was baked in a wood fired oven and arrived piping hot. The top was browned to perfection exactly as I requested and the crust was just right – golden brown, light and crispy. It was a truly wonderful taste when I took that first bite. My friend chose the Nagano pork with dijon and portobello mushrooms from the table d’hôte menu. The meal was well presented and was served with potatoes and steamed vegetables (broccoli, turnips, zucchini and carrots). The pork was juicy and melt-in-your-mouth tender, while the vegetables and potatoes were cooked to perfection. The soup, which accompanied her meal, was cream of chicken and celery soup. With one spoonful we were both in seventh heaven with this flavourful mixture. It is the best soup we have ever had! Everything was really fresh and had the flavour of homemade food. The portions were large and we both took our leftovers home in a beautiful, reusable “Manago” bag. Overall the table d’hôte menu was reasonably priced ranging from $26-$31. Pizzas started at $14.

There were many tempting desserts but we decided to share a slice of chocolate cake. It was fresh and moist. We finished our meal with a cup of coffee. We were surprised when the waiter brought us each a shot of flaming Sambuca.

Our waiter, Alejandro, was incredibly friendly, courteous and accommodating. He took the time to answer any questions we had about the menu as well as make several suggestions.

We had a very pleasant dining experience with flavourful food, friendly service and an awesome ambiance. For this reason I highly recommend going to Resto Vieux Fort Manago. My friend and I will definitely go back. I’m already planning to try the veal scallopini while she’s vowed to order the chicken parmesan.
