Mom Crush - Tracy BraunsteinMarch 13, 2017
Tracy Braunstein has what some moms might consider to be the most difficult job ever: she’s a Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant (and the owner of SleepTight Solutions). With her own two boys, who are 9 and 5, this perhaps sleep deprived mom not only manages a busy household but a busy business as well, where sleepless nights are commonplace. We’re in awe of all that she does… and when you see what she had to (honestly) say about balancing her work and personal life, as well as being grateful, you’ll see why we have a CRUSH on her.
What’s the best part about owning your business?
The freedom it gives you. As a mom it allows me to spend time with my kids and be there for them. You have the freedom to make your own schedule, and have the authority to make the decisions that YOU feel are best for you, your business and, ultimately, your family.
Any tips for moms thinking of starting a business?
You have to do something you love – it takes a lot of commitment and dedication. You end up working more than less because the hours are so sporadic. Make sure it’s something you’re passionate about and love doing. If you love it, it won’t feel like work.
If you could pick one quality, what quality do you hope your child embodies: independence, creativity, or ambition?
Ambition. You can have all the creativity in the world, but you need the ambition to go out and make things happen!
What is your secret to work-family balance?
I don’t actually believe that I’ve achieved that perfect balance all of the time, and I think you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has. We also need to try to alleviate the pressure that society places on us moms to be everything to everyone all of the time. The real answer is, it’s a constant struggle to find the balance, and some days are going to be more balanced than others. But first and foremost, you have to keep in mind what’s really important: prioritize! Decide what can wait and what can’t.
What is your go-to dinner?
When it’s hectic (and when isn’t it hectic?!) I make things simple and I put out a little bit of everything: veggies, fresh bagels, tuna, hardboiled eggs. Or you know what’s really easy and I’ve always loved? Spaghetti with sharp cheddar cheese and a side salad. Oh, and pancakes – you can throw all kinds of healthy things in there like ground flax seed and yogurt, you can give your kids something guilt-free in two minutes, and they love it! I’m good at many things, but cooking ain’t one of them!
What was the last book you read?
The revised edition of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child (by Marc Weissbluth). He came out with a new one and I wanted to read up on all his new findings. I love everything sleep.
How was it?
Great. He’s the sleep guru and my recommended go-to source if you’re going to pick a book to read about sleep.
What is your favourite family vacation?
There’s this gem of a place called Anna Maria Island in Florida (only now I’ve exposed it to everybody!). It’s this quaint little beach town and it’s phenomenal!
Any words of wisdom to share with us?
Anything is possible in this world, you just have to take that first step. I always try to be in a state of gratitude. Be present. Every time I walk out of a client’s home I have this surge of gratitude and feel so blessed to do the work that I do, to go into people’s living rooms and have a cup of coffee and hold their babies and give them tools to lead happier, healthier lives. I feel so blessed to do that each time. Realizing YOUR blessings and living in a state of gratitude are my pieces of wisdom.
