Mom Crush: Timea Kristof

Timea Kristof is a magical mom – not only is she married with two sons, ages 4 and 8, but she also recently launched her own businesses: MessageFromSanta.ca and MessageFromTheToothFairy.ca, where she creates personalized packages for children from Santa and the Tooth Fairy.

Driven, patient, busy, and always looking for some magic, here’s what Timea had to say about home organization, her family’s idea of a fun night together, and why she’s never had a single day to herself since becoming a mom.

Tell us about a typical day (if there is such a thing).

We have a routine during the week: we wake up before 7 and have breakfast and get the kids out the door by 8, I drop off the kids and start my work day, and then I pick them up after 4. Both kids have extra activities after school, I study with my 8-year-old, and once the kids go to bed I work for a few more hours.

Have your children helped to inspire your work?

Yes definitely. I see a lot of wonder and possibilities in them, and having a great imagination is the beginning of everything – they need to create and imagine.

Who is a female role model you admire and greatly respect?

It’s my mother. She went through a lot and I would not be the same person I am today without her.

As moms the day can escape us, so what is your best time-saving trick?

Routine and being organized. I prepare everything the night before.

What is your favourite part of your job?

The lifestyle – it gives me flexibility. And I love to be creative so it helps me explore my creativity. I really enjoy putting together the packages, and I like working with different people to make that happen. I’ve met a lot of people through my business ventures.

What do you do you do on a day off?

I try to have the weekends for my kids, and we have a lot of activities – both boys are in hockey so we have practices and do some shopping. But if I have to work, I work, but mostly at night. Since my kids were born I have not taken a day to myself. I had an opportunity two weeks ago to go to the movies, and I didn’t make it because I had to do this and that. Even if I plan a day off, it’s probably not going to happen (laughs)!

Any tips for moms thinking of starting a business?

They have to find their own passion because they’ll spend a lot of time working on that business. And have a team and don’t forget to ask for help when you need it.

What is something you do with your child/children?

We do game and fondue night on Friday nights. We get chocolate fondue and sit on the carpet on a blanket in the living room and after we eat, we choose a game like Monopoly. We just got a karaoke machine and they get to sing, which is really fun too. I don’t think they will be singers (laughs) but it’s fun to be creative for a performance.

What is your favourite date night?

A date afternoon – we go to see a movie or go out to eat a late lunch. My husband likes to try different restaurants… like last time, we went to a Chilean restaurant.

What is your go-to dinner?

Spaghetti with pesto – it’s easy to make and everyone likes it!

What television series are you marathoning?

This Is Us and Million Dollar Listing.

What cartoon makes you nuts?

Spongebob Square Pants – I can’t stand him! He’s the most annoying out of the all the characters!

What is your favorite family vacation?

We love to travel, and we try and travel twice a year. In the summertime we try and go to The Caribbean, and before we had kids we travelled a lot and had some very exciting vacations. I’m originally from Hungary so we used to go back there – my older son has been to Hungary, and maybe we’ll do a Europe trip in 1-2 years when the 4-year-old is a bit older.

What is your go-to drink?

Maybe an Amaretto Sour with lots of water or lemon juice.
