Mom Crush: Sara Mechaly

Sara Mechaly of Baby’s Breath & Holly has not only been making Montrealers (and beyond) the ultimate gift givers (she owns the online personalized gift boutique)- she is also married and has an 11-year-old daughter Mollie. She loves her family and has grown a thriving company with stayability, which is why we just had to feature her as one of our Mom Crushes. How does being a parent influence her business decisions? And what’s her best way to save time during the week? Read on to find out…

Describe a typical day in your life.

Whatever I have on my plate I finish that night. I don’t like to wake up to work – I like to start my day fresh. I’m an early riser so I check my emails in the morning, and I go to the gym every day – I like to start my day on a good foot. I bring her to school and pick her up every day (even though I’m always busy, I like to be very hands on. Then in the evening it’s homework and dinner, and Mollie normally has dance or some sort of activity. At night I finish up work. I do most of my own deliveries – clients are happy when they see me come to the door, so we offer very personal service. Every single order is packaged and ready to go for the next day.

You’re raising a pre-teen girl – what’s important to you about parenting her?

When I pick her up from the school and we go home, the time from 4-6 is for her. I’m not working. I think that it’s important to be around at home at that time. That’s why I start my day early: so when she gets home, it’s home time.

How has your child helped to inspire your work?

I make products as Mollie grows. So recently, I got into camp products like blankets, sleeping bags, towels, hand-painted clipboards and personalized makeup cases. As Mollie grew up and matured, I implemented new products to grow with her. She also comes with me and helps me choose new products. She’s such an aware 11-year-old that I have no choice but to be up-to-date and current.

As moms the day can escape us, so what is your best time-saving trick?

Sundays are one of the days I prep myself for the week. I do groceries, and get uniforms and dance stuff ready. The mornings are very quick, and if I’m not organized it becomes chaotic.

What is your favourite part of your job?

Making people happy. And I’m very creative (I have a degree in fashion marketing) so I get to use my creativity but use it in a different way. People give me the freedom to use my creativity for their kids and babies, and it makes me happy that it’s appreciated.

What do you do you do on a day off? Do you even know what a day off is?

No…. I only get a day off if I’m on a cruise. I even work on vacation. My husband encourages me to take some time off because he says I work 365 days a year. If I ignore emails, I will lose that order or customer. And I don’t want to do that.

Any tips for moms thinking of starting a business?

You have to be patient. You have to really take pride in your product, and you have to offer 100% customer service. If you don’t feel that way, then it won’t work. Your customer, no matter if she’s spending $15 or $500, that money is very important to her. I always try and make my customer happy. I’ll say, “What is your budget” and work with you and give you the best gift for what you have. There are so many different people in this world – some people have a lot and some don’t, and even if they don’t they want to give something to someone.

What is your go-to dinner?

Pizza.

What is your secret to work-family balance?

Exercise. 100%. If I don’t exercise then I don’t get out my ya-yas and I fester in it all day.

What television series are you marathoning?

Chicago PD!

What was the last book you read?

I got a fabulous book in Florida called A Walk Across the Sun by Corban Addison. I’m obsessed with him!
