Mom Crush: Amanda Lubin-Hersh

Amanda Lubin-Hersh wears many hats – mom to a 3 ½-year-old and a 15-month old, she is also a yoga instructor, nutritional health coach and an essential oil educator. She has a passion for health that is fuelled by her desire to take control of her family’s health. She is also a huge proponent of the benefits of essential oils. Amanda lets our readers in on a typical day in this busy mommy’s life, and the personal story of how she was inspired to start down her career path in health.

Can you describe a typical day?

I try to set myself up with a routine. I have a lot of help in the morning, so I bring my older son to daycare around 10 and I do an oil class or a one-on-one session for my essential oil business. Then I try to get everything done, like groceries, and that way I have the afternoon and early evening with my boys. My husband comes home, we try to have some playtime, and then it’s dinnertime, bath time, and bedtime. My husband and I get a little together time once the kids are asleep.

What led you down this career path?

Well, I’m a nutritional health counselor as well as a yoga and fitness instructor, and I recently got into essential oils. I was looking for something else to do in my life that was health-related and would benefit my family. I was speaking to my homeopath about essential oils, took a class and fell in love with the products.

Why do you love the natural benefits of essential oils?

My son had been up all night screaming in pain that night I had my first essential oils class, and I kept going in and breastfeeding but I could tell he was in a lot of pain. I saw him on his monitor holding his ears and screaming, so I thought, “Lets try these oils.” I applied the oil and the pain went away in 20 minutes and he slept for the rest of the night. And I thoughts, “Oh my goodness, there’s something to this.”

What kind of essential oils do you use?

doTERRA. It’s a very unregulated industry so oils are not all created equally. These are third-party certified with no fillers or artificial ingredients, and they’re free of contaminants. They are very powerful for all health and wellness issues. I teach classes and do one-on-one appointments.

Who’s been your biggest inspiration?

My mother has been a huge inspiration. She’s been through a lot – she’s so strong and determined, and so open. I’m so blessed that the people around me in my life have always been open to everything I’ve incorporated into my life. My mother had breast cancer 15 years ago and I remember back then feeling really helpless and I wanted to take control back, so I wanted to do everything to feel stronger and be healthier, and be proactive, to stay healthy. I realize you can’t change everything outside your home but you can definitely do the best you can in your own home and with your own mind, body and spirit.

What is your favourite date night?

My husband and I love to go out for a nice dinner, hang out with friends, and be very relaxed.

If you could pick one quality, what quality do you hope your child embodies: independence, creativity, or ambition?

Independence. Because with independence comes so many other qualities, including self-confidence. You want your kids to have confidence and therefore be independent and feel comfortable with who they are and what they do. That way they feel strong and empowered.

What is your go-to dinner?

For me and my husband, I do a lot of organic chicken stir fries. For my kids, who are super picky, my go-to is eggs with some homemade chicken nuggets and organic butternut squash mac and cheese.

What television series are you marathoning?

We’re not really TV people but we just started to watch Blindspot.

What was the last book you read?

Drop the Worry Ball. I really liked it. It teaches you to let go a little and let your kids be independent and do things on their own. Let them make mistakes and watch from afar, and when they accomplish something, you’re going to be there cheering them on.

What is your favourite family vacation?

Going to the cottage. My mom has a cottage in Sainte-Agathe and it’s the best. We get to be with the family, and it’s such a relaxed environment. You really feel like you have that break, even if it’s just for the weekend – you feel rested and rejuvenated. As well, we love being away with my dad and his wife or my in-laws. It's all about being together with family no matter where. That's what's important.

How do you unwind and reconnect?

I definitely take even just a few minutes before the shower. I take a few deep breaths. And I’m crazy for smells, so I like putting on the diffuser and putting in serenity oils, which are so calming and renewing.
