Melany: Questions to ask when choosing a summer camp

There are a lot of things to consider when selecting a summer camp for your child. Whether it’s a day camp, sleep away camp or a speciality camp (that focuses on the arts, sports, tech, or language), each one is unique, offering particular activities and programs that may or may not be suited to your child. Summer camps are also the perfect places to create lasting memories and cultivate lifelong friendships, so you want the experience to be a fulfilling one.

So here are a few questions that you and your child should consider when picking a camp.

What is the history and philosophy of the camp? This will set the tone for the type of camp that it is (and has been).

Who is the staff? Are their counsellors experienced, and do they have specific areas of expertise? How are they trained? Your child needs counsellors that they feel comfortable with.

What are some of the main activities or outings planned for the summer? This will give you a great yardstick to gauge how interested your child will be in that particular camp. You want to know if the camp will not only meet your wants but needs as well.

How much does it cost? Price can play a pretty big role in your decision of a summer camp. See if it fits within the family budget.

What will your child gain from attending this camp? This is one of the most important things to consider, and will ultimately help you in making your decision.
