Melany: Bathing suit shopping made easy in 4 steps

There's one article of clothing I absolutely dread buying, and I think my fellow ladies can identify - no, it's not jeans or even bras. It's BATHING SUIT SHOPPING. Ahhhh!! There is nothing I loathe more.

However, over the years of trying on one- and (gulp!) two-pieces, I've learned a few steadfast rules when it comes to finding the right bathing suit, so here's bathing suit shopping made easy in 4 steps.

Go when you have time. This is not something that can be rushed - it will only add stress to an already overwhelming situation. Make sure you have a good hour or two to devote to perusing the styles as well as trying things on.

Get properly sized. True, the store clerk at Walmart may not be able to provide you with expert bathing suit shopping advice, but at the right boutique, their employees should be able to accurately size you up to ensure you are looking for and buying the right size for your body type.

Avoid trends. Yes, colours and patterns will come and go, but stick to something simple and timeless. Solid hues, easy stripes, and less detail will guide you to the right bathing suit, and will last for years to come.

Consider separates. A one-piece will pigeon-hole you into one style. However, today's separates can be mixed and matched in a myriad of ways, so you can choose pieces that best compliment your body shape, whether you want to add some bust up top (with a ruffled bikini top) or conceal your tummy (with a tank top).

The most important thing is: don't be so hard on yourself. Us mamas put our bodies through you-know-what, and we should be proud of ourselves and our bodies. Happy summer!
