Makeup By Marla: Purple Reigns

People close to me know that I have been a long-standing devotee of Prince for over 30 years. News of his untimely death on April 21st 2016 marked a profound loss to the entertainment industry and to the world as he was a remarkable musician and humanitarian. In honor of the one-year anniversary of Prince's passing, I have decided to dedicate this week’s blog entry to this exceptional artist in his memory. I will therefore review my picks of top purple makeup products to help you create a look suitable for a “Prince-ess."

A great comprehensive purple eyeshadow palette is “Purple Revolution," by Christian Dior. This trio offers a beautiful purple pink highlight, a monochrome mid-range purple lid color and a beautiful deep violet accent for outer eye corner drama. These quality shadows have superior pigmentation and durability. I also really appreciate the veiled reference to Prince’s band, "The Revolution" in the product’s name.

A stunning purple blush by Urban Decay is the Afterglow 8-hour Powder blush in “Bittersweet.” This bright purple blush color blends and applies evenly due to it being a finely milled powder. This allows you to have the perfect natural flushed look without it being overpowering.

Tarte's “Tartiest Creamy Matte Lip Paint" in “Yaassss” is my go-to purple matte lip look when I want to wow a bold lip. I put some on and included the pic to give you an idea of the beautiful rich colour it boasts. With more subtle eye makeup, a color like this can help you rock the bold lip trend without looking “clowny."

Urban Decay came out with a limited edition Alice Through the Looking Glass lipstick in “Mad Hatter.” This is a beautiful bright purple shimmer that is more of a softly nudish pigment for those of you who don’t want that "out there" purple lip look. It comes in a twist up tube with a case that is so colorful and pretty that it will be an eye catcher the minute you take it out of your purse! SCOOP: It is now on sale at Sephora for only $14… so grab yours before they’re gone!

I suggest the Marc Jacobs Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner in Grapevine, #63, which is a dark purple glide-on eye crayon that works great in the water line for all day stay!

Marc Jacobs High Shine Lip Lacquer Lip Gloss in #358, “Boys Don’t Cry,” is an opaque grape purple that applies uniformly and has great color payoff.
The long-lasting 12-hour wear liquid liner in the Sephora collection, #14, is a fancy Violet in metallic amethyst. I like to lightly dab a little bit of Urban Decay Heavy Metal glitter eyeliner in “ACDC” over my purple Sephora liquid liner for a tad of glittery glam when I desire a nighttime party look since it is a perfect complementary lilac.

My go-to purple mascara is Marc Jacobs O!Mega Lash Volumizing Mascara in “Violet Incredible” #70. This is a bold lilac mascara that volumizes and curls lashes without any flaky mess after long wear. It has a unique double brush and the formula is packed with vitamins, extracts and oils to ensure high impact while protecting and nourishing your lashes.

I recommend Gelée D'interdit smoothing gloss balm crystal shine in #8 “Electric Purple,” as it offers a sheer Purple opalescent micro glitter lip look that is simply gorgeous in sunlight! This is something you can put on before the pool to protect your lips from harmful rays and make you subtly stunning at the same time.

Two purple goodies in the Sephora collection worthy of note... the Microsmooth Baked Eyeshadow Trio in #06 “Ultraviolet Poppy Purple” that offers three shadows ranging from light lilac to medium purple to dark purple and Sephora's V For Volume Mascara in “Purple” that is darkish purple when it dries and understated for day wear.

“Marla! These are all high end suggestions! How do I go purple on a budget?” you ask? Ask no more! Here are some recommendations so that you can be Mauve On Modest Moolah!

The Annabelle Shadow Quad Quatuor in “Grapevine” includes four numbered shadows with instructions to guide you through the shadow application process. Number one is a soft highlighting color called “Linen,” 2 is a deep dark outer V shade called “Grape”. Number 3 is a bright pop of purple called “Violet” and the fourth color is a light blending shade for the crease named “Lilac." All these shadows have a pretty decent color payoff and blend nicely together.

The Anabelle Shadow Trio in “Twilight” is a colour dupe for the Christian Dior pallette I mentioned earlier.

I really love Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in the limited edition color, “Vision In Violet.” Great Lash mascara is one of the top selling drugstore brand mascaras in North America as it is a great “Volumizer” and this purple version doesn’t disappoint.

Maybelline Color Jolt Lip Paint in #40 “Violet Rebel” has a wonderful bright purple color delivery and comes in a cute compact little tube with a sponge tip that allows for perfect application.

Wet N Wild’s Color Icon Blush in, “In A Purple Haze” features three hues of purple blush in one pan allowing you to use the darker color for contouring and the lighter pink/mauve shade as a blush on the apples of your cheeks. All three colors can be mixed together to create a modest flushed look.

Two eyeliners I adore by Annabelle: the Smudge Liner Eyeliner in “Violet Vortex” for the lower lash line as it comes with a convenient smudger tip at one end and their Stay Sharp Self Sharpening waterproof Kohl eyeliner in “Ultraviolet,” for tight lining the upper lash line. I snapped a picture of both for you above... and yes, you will notice I am wearing a UV gel polish to compliment this week’s purple theme. It is a colour change temperature sensitive mood gel lacquer that actually changes color and goes from pinky lilac when warm to deep violet when cold and it’s often in transition somewhere in between the two shades. The effect is therefore often an ombré morph making my manicure ever-changing and a innovative delight for people when they take notice. Those who know me know I constantly wear different color combos of mood gel depending on the season and fashion trends. In the photo I am sporting  Le Chat's Perfect Match Mood Changing gel polish in the colour “Wicked Love."
