Makeup By Marla: Conceal Appeal

Looking to go undercover? Skin imperfections are a reality for most of us. Luckily there are a host of wonderful concealers and correctors on the market that I nicknamed "camo ammo" (i.e., helping us combat and camouflage what we wish to hide).

To ensure that concealers work their best, it is important to maintain proper skin care. If skin is not properly cleansed, toned and well moisturized prior to the application of concealers, these correcting products can become embedded in fine lines and pores, enhancing as opposed to covering imperfections.

My favourite concealer of all time rivals everything I have ever tried to date. Shape Tape by Tarte is heads above any concealer out there as the formula provides near total coverage that lasts! It's huge sponge applicator picks up the perfect amount of product. All you need to do is make a series of dots around the areas that you wish to conceal and then softly blend the product with a Beauty Blender or your fingertips. This concealer is available in a notable range of shades, allowing one to find the perfect fit for any skin tone. The only negative is that this product is not available in stores in Canada and is an exclusive to Ulta stores in the USA. Therefore, you will need to order yours online or stock up on this gem during your next trip.

Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer has an impressive matte finish and provides lightweight full coverage. It works by actually blurring imperfections and smoothing skin. This product is rich in antioxidants, vitamins and collagen boosters that actually help to improve the look of skin with use over time. This cream comes in a compact little pot and is best applied with your fingertips. Another great concealing product by Nars is their Radiant Creamy Concealer, which is in a liquid format and applies evenly with a doe foot applicator. This product comes in a huge array of shades to fit every skin tone. The beauty of this product is that it can be applied as light coverage for areas of the skin needing just a small touch up but can also be built up in zones requiring greater coverage.

Maybelline's Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser is an impressively concentrated concealer for its drug store price point. The product looks like a wand with a dome sponge applicator at its tip. The creamy cosmetic is directly dispensed onto its sponge with a clockwise twist of the tube. Age Rewind is also a treatment concealer that helps to erase fine lines. I am impressed with the effectiveness and long-lasting coverage payoff of this concealer. My only beef is that a lot of product can easily/accidentally be dispensed onto the dome sponge applicator when manipulating this rather bizarre tube, sometimes producing a sloppy application. My trick: I simply remove the sponge from mine. Doing this will leave you with a tiny tipped tube and the ability to dispense small amounts of the product onto your fingertip or ideally onto a micro Beauty Blender, facilitating a more precise application.

Wet N Wild's Photo Focus Concealer has been called the Shape Tape dupe by some professionals in the makeup world and I somewhat agree. This line of concealers would be much more impressive if they expanded their shade range, which currently lacks hues for those with fair to medium skin tones. The product definitely covers well, but I find I have to dip the applicator back into the tube to get more product several times during one application. This is because the small sponge applicator tends not to absorb the product adequately. This is not the case with Shape Tape's large and comfortably soft applicator that grabs enough product with one dip for application under both eyes. Still, Photo Focus is definitely a viable alternative for those seeking an effective budget friendly concealer or for those of us who can't always get our hands on that illusive tube of Tarte!

Bye Bye Undereye Full Coverage Anti-aging Waterproof Concealer by IT Cosmetics is one of my new-found favourites. It is sooo pigmented! This heavenly product in a squeeze tube amazingly conceals dark circles, hyperpigmentation, age spots, discoloration, spider veins, and even reduces the appearance of under-eye bags! Small wonder it has won awards for its performance! Unfortunately this product will set you back $32 for a rather small 0.28 oz tube. The good news is that a little goes a long way.

Maybelline Cover Stick Corrector is my go-to everyday concealer. This product is old school, but highly effective in concealing and correcting imperfections. It still is a number-one seller in the USA after being on the market for decades. The line offers a small range of creamy, blendable colours including colour corrector shades that work well and are easy on the pocketbook!

Kat Von D Lock It Concealer offers a vast range of shades. It blends very evenly, brightens the area under the eyes and provides full stay put coverage with one swipe. Love it!!

Color Correcting Palettes:

Concealers in various colours, each geared toward correcting and camouflaging specific skin discoloration issues are makeup miracles!

Note these colour correcting rules of thumb:

Purple and Blue - cancel yellow/sallow tones and brighten dullness

Pink - cancels brown and covers sun and age spots

Yellow - conceals purple or bluish under eye circles

Green - cancels red caused by sunburn and rosacea and covers blemishes

Red - cancels green and covers very dark circles on deeper skin tones as well as tattoos

Orange - cancels blue and covers dark circles and bruises on medium to dark skin tones

Peach - cancels blue and covers dark circles and bruises on fair and light skin tones

If you are up for experimenting with some colour correcting, I suggest you try the amazing NYX Color Correcting Palette or Stila's Correct & Perfect All-In-One Color Correcting Palette. If you are searching for a budget-friendly option, the Wet N Wild Coverall Correcting Palette is pretty effective for its reasonable price.

As always, I look forward to and welcome your questions and discussion in the comment section below. It is great fun to chat with you!
