Healthy Life: Fitting in Fitness

Instead of saying “I don’t have the time” try saying “It’s not a priority for me”. How does that sound? Not so good right? Yet this is the most common excuse that people (moms especially!) use when trying to reason why they cannot fit in fitness to their lives. Many people complain about their health issues but do nothing to fix them because they feel that they don’t have the time. Well, we all have the same 24 hours in a day yet some of us do find the time. Why is that? It’s simple, we make it a priority. This means cutting out TV and other time wasting activities that don’t promote good mental and physical health.

Trust me, I get it!! I’m also busy. I’m a working mom with 2 kids and 2 jobs. 9 months out of the year, I work 7 days a week. Yet still I work out daily. I get up at 5am and workout in my home. It’s a time of day when the house is quiet and I can get my workout in before the morning chaos begins. It does mean that I have to go to bed a little earlier but that’s a small sacrifice to pay for the energy I feel after an early morning workout! I have found that I’m a happier person and a better mom. I have more patience with my husband and kids, I have more energy to get through the day and most of all, starting the day with exercise induced endorphins makes every little thing fabulous!!

Also, I have seen that there is a direct and very positive impact on my children. They want to exercise with me; they are more interested in sports and less in video games. They want to play outside more and be active. An active mom really does mean active kids!

Another benefit is that a regular and especially a morning fitness regime regulates the body and helps it to crave healthier food. Start a morning routine and you will find yourself making healthier food choices throughout the day.

The key is finding a workout program that meets your goals and peaks your interest. If you love yoga then start there. Don’t force yourself to lift weights if it bores you, choose workouts that inspire and excite you. There’s something for everyone so do your research and choose something that fits your personality and your health goals. Then make it a priority and schedule the time with yourself the way you would schedule a meeting with your boss or your employees.
