December activities for families

December is a busy time, with all of the holiday parties and more, but that doesn't mean there isn't time to check out some of the fun local activities that are going on in and around this great city of ours. And a lot of them are very family-centric. Here are a few we've checked out in the last few weeks...

Exporail. Been to the train museum in St. Constant on the South Shore? Not only do they have 40 full-sized trains on display (many of which you can go into), but they also have an amazing model train room (with a small version track featuring Thomas the Train, a huge hit with my 2-year-old). And, given it's the holidays, they have extra special events going on there, like visits from Santa, cookie decorating, scavenger hunts, and more!

Montreal Science Centre. Do you love dinosaurs? Then you'll love the exhibit Dinosaurs Unearthed 2, which allows visitors to travel back more than 65 million years and discover 14 life-size animatronic dinosaurs, two full-scale skeletons and 20 fossils! Your kids will love all the fantastic interactive features of this exhibit, and then they can explore and learn in the Science Centre's amazing kid's playroom.

Then swing by the skating rink at the Old Port, which is now open (despite all of the other rinks closing in Montreal because of the mild weather). Go for a skate or just sit back, sip on a hot chocolate, and take in the awesome seasonal views. Or visit Atrium Le 1000 de la Gauchetière for some festive (and warm) indoor skating fun.

Sign up for a cooking class! Loblaws (many of which are becoming Provigos) are getting ready to release their 2016 cooking class schedule. They have classes for little ones (starting at 2 years old) all the way to adult. We recently attended a fun Friday morning session where my son and I got to make and then decorate snowman pancakes (which we enjoyed with coffee for mommy and juice for the bean along with fruit), and then each child was given a vanilla cupcake to decorate with icing and candies. And it was just $9!

Go downtown. From the exciting Ogilvy window to the trees and Christmas lights adorning the store windows, lamp posts, and more, you and your family will love driving or strolling around this festive city of ours.
