Credit Cards Are A Shopper’s Best Friend – Especially During The Holiday Season!

Between gifts, meals and vacations, nothing busts our budgets like the holiday season. However, your credit card may offer some unexpected relief.

No, I’m not suggesting you plunge yourself in debt. However, if you stick to your budget, you’re far better off using your credit card, than cash or debit. Here’s why:

1. Credit Card Rewards

If you’re going to spend a fortune during the holidays, you might as well take full advantage and get rewarded.

There are several Canadian cash back credit cards which offer extra rewards in certain merchant bonus categories like grocery, gas, pharmacy and restaurants. So while you’re preparing for Chanukah, Christmas and the New Year’s festivities, get up to 4% cash back at the grocery store. You can even combine coupon savings with your credit card cash back and double dip on your savings!

2. Never Miss A Sale Again

What’s worse than being under the gun for your holiday shopping, only to find the same item you just purchased on sale somewhere else?

Did you know that some Canadian credit cards offer a solution? With price protection, if you make a purchase with your card and find the same product advertised in Canada at a lower price within 60 days after purchase, the difference will be refunded, up to $500!

That means that you can buy now, find the same item advertised on sale on boxing day, and claim the difference!

3. Protect Your Gifts

Travelling with gifts raises all kinds of issues, not the least of which is making sure nothing breaks along the way. But just in case that glass vase does get broken when the flight attended stuffs the overhead bin to the brim, your credit card has you covered.

Whether your card calls it purchase protection or purchase assurance, it covers most items purchased with your credit card for the first 90 days from the date of purchase for theft or damage! That’s right, even if someone swipes your new sunglasses you just bought for the holidays, or you break your new pair of skis pounding the moguls, you’re covered.

4. Extended Warranty

Ever get the extended warranty shake down after you buy a TV, coffee maker, camera or sofa. Salespeople push hard for you to buy extended warranty coverage, that can cost 10%-30% of the item itself!

Use your credit card and it will automatically extend the manufacturer’s warranty up to a year – for free! So if the manufacturer has a 3 year warranty, your card will cover you for a fourth year.

5. Fraud Protection

If you’re going to order something that requires delivery, never pay cash. On the off chance your sofa never shows up, or the retailer goes bankrupt before delivery, your money will be hard to recover.

However, if you make the purchase with your credit card, the credit card company will be on the hook for all unauthorized charges!
